Single Mothers Face Challenges, but Resources are Available to Assist – North Carolina

In today’s society, single mothers face countless of challenges ranging from being able to financially provide for their children, continuing their education, and providing meals, clothes, and housing. However, despite the many obstacles that single mothers face on a daily basis, there is a wide range of resources available to assist.

Assistance for single mothers in North Carolina include financial assistance through TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families), in which struggling families are able to “receive up to 60 months of aid with cash, housing, nutrition, and more; assistance with childcare, in which the North Carolina’s Division of Child Development aids in providing “subsidized child care services” to single mothers who are employed – this particular program is funded by the state as well as the federal government and will work diligently with the mother to choose a child care arrangement that is suitable for her and her family; and assistance with healthcare, education, and transportation.

Although these resources are available to assist single mothers in need, unfortunately not all have a strong support system from their family. “My family support is limited. I can’t expect for my family to stop everything they’re doing and drop everything they need to do just to watch my kids, so I can get done what I need to do,” says Howell who understands that she can’t depend on family all the time, but despite those circumstances, she must continue to work hard in order to provide a better life for her and her family.
