Annual North Carolina Gospel Fest Honors Cancer Survivors

Mebane, North Carolina – Carol Diggs, organizer of the North Carolina Gospel Fest held her annual event this year in Mebane North Carolina, in honor of cancer survivors. Prior to this year, Diggs has always held her events in the Raleigh/ Durham area but decided to have this one in Mebane, N.C. as it was home to one of the cancer honorees.

“I love this because in this particular case, it’s not all about me, it’s not all about perfect protocol, but it’s all about the survivors and the honorees today, and God giving me the glory in this,” says Diggs.

This event was special in that it honored those who had survived various types of cancers, such as cervical cancer, throat cancer, breast cancer, and prostate cancer. Men and women who had survived this illness took to the stage to share how they dealt with finding out that they had cancer, and how they are grateful to still be alive.

Attendees were able to enjoy food from Cracker Barrel as well as live entertainment from gospel recording artist, Jackie O Kelley. Kelley, a survivor of breast cancer performed her hit single “Letting Go.”

In addition, this event brought in over ten vendors, such as Relay for Life (The American Cancer Society); Durham Social Services, which sought to inform people about becoming a foster parent and the need for children to have a secure and loving home; Shop4Hope, an organization created by Rachel Faulkner, also a survivor of breast cancer, to bring cancer awareness through hand-made gifts and collectables; and Scrumptious Palace Bodi-Es-Scent-juls, which was founded by Simone Thomas in honor of her son who was murdered by a neighborhood watchman. Through hand-made body products, Thomas hopes to be able to raise money to help support children in need of school supplies.

Diggs who lost her father to cancer wanted to host an event in honor of his legacy – to “show people that you can make it and you can be a survivor.”
